State of the Union 2015

You should be able to listen live to the 2015 State of the Union Address on C-SPAN at 8:00 tonight (Tuesday, January 20). If that time is not convenient for you, you should be able to find the address in the C-Span library. Add a brief comment here summarizing your impressions.   How would you tie the State of the Union address to Henry Parkes' "big three" essentials of civilization (physical security, ethical guidance, and emotional fulfillment)?

Newly-elected Iowa Senator Joni Ernst will be giving the Republican response.  Should be amusing if she includes zingers like those in her Make 'Em Squeal campaign ad.  If you prefer to comment on her response to the President's speech, feel free to do that.   How would you tie Senator Ernst's comments to Henry Parkes' "big three" essentials of civilization (physical security, ethical guidance, and emotional fulfillment)?

  1. I thought it was amazing how much Obama actually cares about the people and has concerns just as if he wasn't the president. It was really nice to know that he wants to lower student debt and get higher paying jobs. Obama showed physical security by wanting to protect the people and want to get jobs for the people. He wants people to protect from the different diseases. He had ethical guidance by wanting things to be fair for the American people for when they trade. He is giving people the emotional fulfillment by wanting community college to be free, try to lower the debt, and wanting people to have higher minimum wage.

  2. According to the President, the government has achieved the fastest growing economy since 1999. Along with that, America has freed the grip from foreign oil. That falls under physical security, I believe. Under ethical guidance, I thought of what Obama was saying about the government not standing in the way of the working middle class, or really any class for that matter. Another thing that he said that would possibly fall under this category is that it is easier now to contribute to the success of America through jobs. It is easier to contribute to the success, not just share in the success. There were quite a few examples of emotional fulfillment in the address. This would include the mentioning of an increase in jobs, the mentioning of more people being insured than ever before, and the mentioning of our growing economy.

  3. Obama has been pushing for all these great things for this country, for example like free College for 2 years or making sure everyone regardless of rich or poor. By raising the minimum wage, that will give more money that have been struggling all their lives. American students come out of college with a 26000$ debt, which is an outstanding number for anyone to come out with. All this that I have listed is emotional fulfillment. He wants American women and men to have receive the same wages regardless of sex. Our president till his last breath will make sure America stays this great country.

  4. Obama is giving physical security to us by protecting us from Ebola. He is sending doctors over to Africa to stop the disease from spreading to different countries. He is showing emotional fulfillment by helping the economy grow . The economy has gone up in the last few months. He is giving us ethical guidance by wanting things to be fair and the people to have a say.

  5. You could say that Obama is referring to emotional fulfillment by saying "The shadow of crisis has passed, the State of the Union is strong. This quote along with his mention of decreasing the troop deployment by 165,000 could give some Americans hope, happiness, and pride. Of course, the president mentions the good things that have happened in our country but he doesn't mention the negative. Citizens need to realize that there is still a lot that needs to change in society. We do not live in a peaceful, uniform, healthy society. The president has done many good deeds with his time in office but there is still more to be done.

  6. President Obama gave a very engaging state of the union speech that appealed to all Americans. He addressed the idea of emotional fulfillment when he stated that: our unemployment rate is lower than it was before the recession, more kids are graduating than every before, and that we are now free from the “grip of foreign oil.” Obama also spoke on ethical guidance when he stated that everyone, who’s determined and hardworking, should have an equal opportunity to receive a college degree without taking on a boatload of debt; his goal is to make free community college a reality. Lastly, the president addressed security when he discussed the recent string of cyber attacks. The president explained that he is pushing for the passage of legislation that will push more money towards combating cyber attacks that threaten our public or government institutions. In general, the president did a very good job of encouraging the American public.

  7. Does the taking from the wealthy really help us? We'd have to charge the rich more so that those who aren't providing any sort of service to the government. We have to pay that extra amount for the government to process that transaction. So what good does taking money from the rich do?

  8. Overall, the President's address related to Americans of any age and place in life. From the start, he was optimistic. He reminded us that the State of the Union was strong and will continue to be. For physical security, he reminded us that we are securing ways for people to live comfortably by making child care an important topic for the near future, increasing wages, lowering the cost of fuel, and in general, improving the economy. He also spoke about hunting down terrorists throughout the world to protecting our country. In regards to ethical guidance, he spoke for some time about providing well-deserved help to veterans in the form of healthcare, education, and jobs. In regards to emotional fulfillment, he spoke about his motivation to improve life for families, college students, and struggling Americans. While he talked mostly about the positive aspects and little of the negative aspects of our nation, I think it is important for the us to maintain our dream of a stable and successful country.

  9. President Obama seems rather optimistic of what is to come of our nation. He says the economy has been looking up since 1999 and will get better. He reassures the American people of the safety of our nation; the troops have been brought home. Obama says "the shadow of crisis has passed, and the state of the Union is strong." This sounds pretty good for physical security. He talks about the economy and how it can look up. We have to choose what we will be as a nation, and ethical guidance will help determine this. If we go about keeping our nation as is and better, emotional fulfillment will be achieved. Obama goes on to say that we can rebuild our economy on a new foundation and the reason he ran for the presidency was for the middle class. What about the other classes? What is taking from the upper class for the lower class going to achieve in the long run?

  10. I find where we as a country have come to is by far and in a way a wonderful upswing of the past. Leading in renewable resources, top of the heap in oil and gas, and bringing home our troops. The physical security that is felt not only by, but for the troops coming home is more than words can describe. We have our fighting force on our home soil, and what, I ask unto you, makes for physical safety like having the greatest army in the world at your beckon call? Nothing. Because of the fact that physical safety is such a secure thing to us we are able to work without fear, go to school as we see fit, and we are able to focus on what needs to be done. While crime and incarceration may have fallen, we still have to many inmates behind bars of which may never leave our system. That is just another number that we must pay our taxes for at the end of the year, but there is no real result that come from it. But on the other hand the fact that it is being pushed for for community college to become free lets me know that our ethical guidelines are still intact. We doing what is good for the many, takes precedence over what is good and profitable for the few. So far as emotional fulfillment goes how could we not be happy? We have the chances to do whatever it is with our lives should we just be willing to work at it. Which under our constitution we have the ability to do so, so long as we have the drive to do what needs be done! I would also like to tip my hat unto the president for his comment after receiving a round of applause after pointing out he can run for no more terms. "I know because I won both of them" touche Mr. President, touche.

  11. President Obama's speech covered many topics related to physical security, ethical guidance, and emotional fulfillment. He talked about recent American military achievements, fair opportunities for individuals and businesses, and a system where middle and lower class families would experience a better financial situation. All the ideas that the president presented were in the best interest of the American people. Some of his goals may be difficult to achieve or have negative effects that outweigh the benefits, but it is good to see that the president is trying to improve the life of every American. I like how he addresses the issue of partisanship and encourages both sides to meet in the middle.
