Joan of Arc (extra credit)

There are many fascinating stories connected with the Hundred Years' War and, fortunately for us, some good translations of some of the best source material for this period.  We have, for instance this account of the trial of Joan of Arc.  Read through the selection and note what you find particularly interesting or important.

  1. I found it particularly interesting that Joan told of what had happened throughout her journey, and the people decided to postpone the trial to a later date.
Joan seemed like a person who knew what she was doing even if it took her awhile to complete a task. She seemed to like avoiding difficult situations that the voice would tell her to do.
Joan was very obedient and I would like to be half the person that she was.
I found that it was important to note that she had always heard the voice everyday and even when she was in trial after she told them what had happened they postponed her execution. ~Cheyenne Krein

  3. I found it important that Joan had a voice that always told her what to do. She always listened to the voice and that got her out of a lot of things for example the extension of her execution.

I found it interesting that Joan had the knowledge to always listen to her voices even though at first she was skeptical about them. Those angels lead her down the right path and made things better for her.

  4. I found it interesting that Joan was as brave as she was. She didn't really have anything going for her, and as soon as she heard the voice, she took a leap of faith and followed it. She was bound and determined to get whatever needed to be done, done.
I like that the audience got a look into her childhood, too. Before I read this, I had just assumed she was a random young girl that happened to be chosen. Joan was driven and that would be a hard task for anyone.
I like the fact that after they heard all this, they were exhausted and had decided they heard enough for one day. It's almost funny.

  5. I found it interesting how Joan stuck to her guns and really never gave up. Most people would lie if they know it would get them out of trouble. She told the truth even though she knew it would lead to her death, that takes a tremendous amount of courage.

  6. I found it very interesting that she was considered a God in French because of her great war abilities and in England she was considered a Devil. It was very interesting to me that she was only 19 years old and accomplished so much at such a young age in the war effort against England. It was interesting that throughout her whole life a voice, or what she considered it to be an angels voice came to her around the age of 13. This angel told her to go to France often. Also found it interesting that she was so honest with her captures when she was caught and that she was so very brave in her fighting efforts. Also that it was interesting that she was so loyal to the King of France, and especially that the voices told her to go see him. Also interesting because that voice had been with her since the last day of her life, basically guiding her though life or the life that she was supposed to live and even gave her the confidence and the determination. Also that Joan never asked for a reward of any kind, but all that she wanted was salvation of her soul.
